Aestuarium was founded by a team of young scientists driven by a shared passion for harnessing synthetic biology to address the world’s most pressing challenges. Inspired by first-hand experience with water scarcity, one of the founders envisioned tackling this global issue first, recognizing that less than 1% of the planet’s accessible water is fresh and available for human use. This personal connection sparked Aestuarium’s mission to reimagine how science and nature can work together. By bioengineering bacteria that remove salt from seawater using light, we offer a modular pretreatment system before reverse osmosis, reducing energy and pressure needed for desalination.
